CdV Database Information

Data Sources

Some data in the CdV Genealogy database was collated up to 10 years ago, at a time when the author was a beginner and may not have obtained primary sources to confirm data in all cases. Although currently in the process of reviewing and confirming this data, please be aware that if information is used from the database or any reported based on the database, it is up to the individual researcher to verify the data with primary records.

A Note about Genealogy Privacy

I have recently been researching genealogical privacy issues and came across the Code of Conduct of the Amateur Genealogist. This publication indicates that the reduction of published personal data to only names and ancestral links may not be the best protection against an individuals privacy.

In the absence of any privacy guidelines for genealogists in Australia, based on a search of The Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner Australian website, I have recently updated my published database on Rootsweb according to the Code of Conduct. The names of living people are protected and changed to "Living". (Rest assured it was always the policy of CdV Genealogy not to publish the personal data of living people, such as birth dates, places and notes etc. If you find this to be incorrect, I apologise in advance and will remove the details immediately.)

Although this is only a preliminary draft Code of Conduct and will only be enforced at this stage within EU countries, it is an interesting publication none the less and can serve as a guide to amateur genealogists in non-EU countries.
